This month we’ve had some proper film time and trying to entertain ourselves, while I rest and recover.

Satanic Panic

A pizza delivery girl at the end of her financial rope has to fight for her life – and her tips – when her last order of the night turns out to be high society Satanists in need of a virgin sacrifice. Samantha is hired as a pizza delivery man. When, at the end of her first working day – at night – she delivers an order to a mansion in a wealthy neighborhood on his scooter, the jerk who receives the pizza does not tip her. Enraged by this, Samantha bursts into the house and finds herself in the coven, where a wealthy elite performs a mysterious ritual with her priestess (Rebecca Romijn). When Satanists discover that Samantha is still a virgin, they drug her and lock her in a room. They need a virgin to offer her up as a sacrifice. However, Samantha escapes, and then, dressed in ritual red clothes, the followers of Satan follow her in pursuit.

Love it, it’s just camp, daft and gory and funny. Excellent light easy to watch movie, I obviously love the occult topic.

Rebel Moon Part 1

When a peaceful settlement on the edge of a distant moon finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival. Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors – outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed.

I’m not a syfy lover usually, but I really really enjoy Rebel Moon and the world building it’s created. I know there is a part 2 which we will watch next, but I hope they do some more.

Rebel Moon Part 2

Kora and surviving warriors prepare to defend Veldt, their new home, alongside its people against the Realm. The warriors face their pasts, revealing their motivations before the Realm’s forces arrive to crush the growing rebellion.

Awesome we are back with our Rebels, my favourite character is the antler wearing robot, he’s so cute!!

Late Night Devil

The film’s prologue is framed as a documentary investigating an unexplained event that occurred on October 31, 1977 during the live broadcast of the sixth season episode of Night Owls with Jack Delroy, a successful variety late-night talk show that competes for ratings with The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

Through his television connections, Night Owls host Jack Delroy makes regular visits to “The Grove”, an elite California camp for rich and powerful men. Sometime later, his wife Madeleine contracts terminal lung cancer despite being a non-smoker and dies, her death having a major effect on Jack as Night Owls halts its production. Jack ultimately returns but the show does not attain the same level of success. Even before she died, an episode featuring Madeleine telling her cancer story doesn’t boost ratings to match Carson’s. In order to recover his rating, Jack decides to do a special occultism-themed episode on Halloween night at the show’s Manhattan studio. The rest of the film comprises salvaged footage from the episode along with behind-the-scenes additions.

I LOVED the angle of the film, the styling and ‘ghostwatch’ way of framing it. But I had wanted something more sinister, and creepier. However I thoroughly enjoyed it..

Fallout Series

In a future, post-apocalyptic Los Angeles brought about by nuclear decimation, citizens must live in underground bunkers to protect themselves from radiation, mutants and bandits.

I’m not a gamer so I had no prior exposure to Fallout, and I’m not particularly a SyFy lover either, but I absolutely LOVED this series, the main actress I know from Yellow jackets. The plot, the music, the characters just sucked me in and kept me so entertained I already can’t wait for series 2. A perfect hit.

Paisley, Scotland, 1697. Thirty-five people accused of witchcraft. Seven condemned to death. Six strangled and burned at the stake. All accused by eleven-year-old Christian Shaw.
Bargarran House, 1722. Christian Shaw returns home, spending every waking hour perfecting the thread bleaching process that will revive her family’s fortune. If only she can make it white enough, perhaps her past sins will be purified too. But dark forces are at work. As the twenty-fifth anniversary of the witch burnings approaches, ravens circle Bargarran House, their wild cries stirring memories and triggering visions.
As Christian’s mind begins to unravel, her states of delusion threaten the safety of all those who cross her path. In the end she must make a terrible choice: her mind or her soul? Poverty and madness, or a devil’s bargain for the bleaching process that will make her the most successful businesswoman Paisley has ever seen?
Her fate hangs by a thread. Which will she choose?

My Review

I knew as a Witch myself I would have mixed emotions on this, mainly as it’s based on real life. And the hatred Christian feels is very real still today, not just witches, but I digress. The author gives us an amazing balance to show how this bigoted hatred view comes about and how it festers and poisons everything. Would you choose your mind or soul? For me it’s the soul every time. All this said, I can’t lie it did rise up emotions in me, I felt such dislike for this character, though  I could also give them my understanding. I liked having the two timelines for Christian, both young and older and how the sins of the past can shape the future, or blight it. How white can you get your thread, the whiter the purer. I know mime would be Red!! Well written and well out of my normal range of reading, Thank you to The Write Reads and Silver Thistle Press for this incredible opportunity,.to find a new author, I will have to read their previous books. Such an intriguing book, one I would whole heartedly recommend to others.

Thank you for the parcel of amazing goodies, I will wear and use the extras, as well as try out the recipes. The most beautiful thoughtful PR parcel to ever have been given. Makes my heart sing x

I love our country’s folklore and our pagan events, and it’s been a journey to try and visit them when possible. The winter watch is a fabulous parade full of excitement in the depths of winter. Takes us nicely to the Solstice.

So it originally dates from the 1400’s Chester’s Winter Watch Parade was held at Christmas. This would entail The City leaders that would hand over the keys to the City to the City Watch ( these were the early police force) after walking around the City to ensure it was secure. Then there would be a banquet that follows and the celebration of Christmas, knowing the City was safe.

This Winter Watch Parade was re-created and brought back (thank goodness) by the Council in the 1990’s. However unlike the Midsummer Watch which was re-created by using the City archives, the Winter Watch instead has been turned into a fun parade in the lead up to Christmas. They do use some of the characters from the Summer Watch, this is a smaller evening parade. Although the cast of characters changes slightly but generally consists of

  • Karamba Samba Band dressed as ghosts and ghouls
  • The Lord of Misrule
  • Cooks
  • Devils
  • Dragons
  • Angels
  • Fire skeletons
  • Ice Queens
  • Jack Frost
  • Tree of Life
  • Giant Santa & Snowman

They have added a fire breathing finale, and the winter watch are joined by Chester Re-enactment group joining as the Chester Watch and a group of giant skeletons, Roman Tours have also joined adding the Midsummer Watch Chariot and a skeleton Emperor .

This parade starts at 7pm, from the Forum Shopping Centre. And the parade continues around the City centre including St Werburgh Street, Northgate Street and Bridge Street. There are performances including dance, fire breathing and sword fights in Eastgate Street outside Brown’s of Chester and in the Town Hall Square.
